Lizzie Collingham: Curry: A Tale of Cooks and Conquerors

Curry: A Tale of Cooks and Conquerors

Description

This imaginative book tells the history of India and its rulers through their food. It follows the story of curry as it spread from the courts of Delhi to the balti houses of Birmingham. Curry is the product of India's long history of invasion. In the wake of the Mughal conquerors, an army of cooks brought Persian recipes to northern India; in the south, Portugese spice merchants introduced vinegar marinades and the chillies they had recently discovered in the New World; the British soon followed, with their passion for roast meat accompanied by cauliflowers and beans. When these new ingredients were mixed with native spices, they produced those disinctly Inidan dishes. Curry tells the story of an array of familar Indian dishes and the people who invented, discovered, cooked and ate them. Teeming with colourful characters, rich in anecdote and meticulously researched, Curry is vivid, entertaining and delicious.

Art is the Highest Form of Hope & Other Quotes by Artists

Description

Advice, strong opinions, and personal revelations by the world's greatest artists - exclusively researched for this new book Featuring the most inspirational and insightful collection of quotes by artists through the ages and across the globe, this exquisite keepsake is the ideal book for artists, collectors, and armchair enthusiasts. As painters, sculptors, photographers, and other visual artists see and experience the world through a unique lens, Art Is the Highest Form of Hope & Other Quotes by Artists shows that their life lessons, private revelations, and frank, often irreverent, opinions can guide us all. This unique and carefully curated book, packed with totally original research, is a go-to resource for revealing thoughts and personal advice on subjects as diverse as beauty, colour, light, sex, chance, discipline, money troubles, originality, fear of failure, danger of success, the creative process, and more - all messages transmitted from the artistic trenches.

However, Mucha's talent was never confined to lithography. Shading the world with a colorful sensuality, Mucha's art expresses itself as much on the monumental decorative panels of a living room as on small delicate China pieces. We meet him late in life: a quiet man, a good father and husband, a fixture in his Brooklyn neighborhood, a landlord and barber with a terrifying scar across his face. As the book unfolds, moving seamlessly between Haiti in the 1960s and New York City today, we enter the lives of those around him, and learn that he has also kept a vital, dangerous secret. Edwidge Danticat' Art is the Highest Form of Hope & Other Quotes by Artists free ebook s brilliant exploration of the " dew breaker" --or torturer--s an unforgettable story of love, remorse, and hope; of personal and political rebellions; and of the compromises we make to move beyond the most intimate brushes with history. It firmly establishes her as one of America' s most essential writers.

Helen Sanderson,Jaimee Lewis: A Practical Guide to Delivering Personalisation: Person-centred Practice in Health and Social Care

A Practical Guide to Delivering Personalisation: Person-centred Practice in Health and Social Care

Description

Personalisation means people, their families and carers having choice and control over their support on a day-to-day basis. To deliver personalised services, professionals and carers need to do more than just hand over financial control: they need to know what is important to a person, the best way to support them, how they communicate and how they make decisions. This book will show how to deliver personalisation through simple, effective and evidence-based person-centred practice that changes people's lives and helps them achieve the outcomes they want. It covers why person-centred practice is relevant to the personalisation agenda and what person-centred thinking and person-centred reviews are, introducing the tools that can help you carry them out. It also explores the relationship between person-centred plans and support plans, and how person-centred practice can be used in the journey of support through adulthood - from prevention or the management of long-term health conditions to reablement, recovery, support in old age and at the end of life. There is also a chapter on taking a person-centred approach to risk. This is an essential guide for all staff in health and social care including service providers, managers, practitioners and students.

As he edges closer to the truth-and one murder follows another-he confronts a conspiracy that imperils those nearest him and threatens to bring down the monarchy. When Eloise's get-rich-quick dad moves them back to his home town to turn the derelict family mansion into a convention centre, Eloise feels an immediate bond with the old house. She begins spending all her time there, ignoring her strange grandmother and avoiding the friendly boy next door. Then Eloise meets a 'ghost girl' who may or may not be from the house's past, and events take a strange - and ultimately dangerous - turn. Beautifully written, poignant and gripping, this is a charming and atmospheric story of personal growth, overcoming grief and the true nature of friendship and family. The new edition of this useful and practical handbook is a guide to the use of induction motors for electricity generation in remote locations and arises out of the practical experience of manufacturers and installers of induction generators working in village locations in a number of countries. The use of motors as generators is now well proven and promises to be an important element in establishing self-sustaining local capacity for village-scale hydro in developing countries. Micro-hydro is a valuable source of energy for rural industries and village electrification schemes. It offers potential to remote communities with applications in village A Practical Guide to Delivering Personalisation: Person-centred Practice in Health and Social Care free download pdf lighting, mechanized food processing, and the supply of power to small-scale industrial activities.

Why Diets Make Us Fat: The Unintended Consequences of Our Obsession with Weight Loss

Description

Everything we know about dieting and weight loss is wrong. In the UK, almost two-thirds of adults are overweight. We think we know the answer: cut calories; eat less. We conclude that being fat is a failure of willpower, perhaps supplemented by a quirk of genetics. Yet research shows that losing weight by willpower alone is almost guaranteed to fail in the long run. In fact, there is no evidence that dieting improves long-term health, and some that suggests yo-yo dieting is more dangerous than being overweight. Combining deep research and brutal candour about her own experience as a yo-yo dieter, neuroscientist Sandra Aamodt explains the science of the obesity epidemic, including new findings about gut bacteria, why bariatric surgery works (it has more to do with your brain than your stomach), and what a real alternative to dieting and weight cycling might look like.

Loretta Lynn's classic memoir tells the story of her early life in Butcher Holler, Kentucky, and her amazing rise to the top of the music industry. "The Subtle Knife" is as absorbing and irresistible as "The Golden Compass"--and even more so, as powerful forces are set in motion. A brilliantly conceived work. --Lloyd Alexander, author of the Prydain Chronicles, and Newbery Medalist for "The High King"" Netter's Clinical Anatomy, 3rd Edition is a Clinical Anatomy textbook you will actually "read." A concise, focused and manageable medical reference textbook for your busy lives! The uniquely aesthetic and memorable Netter-style illustrations - accompanied by descriptive text and tables - help you to visually grasp and focus on the most relevant clinical implications of anatomical concepts. Multiple-choice review questions at the end of each chapter plus online access to the complete text - with additional Clinical examples and study questions - result in a thorough but quick introduction to basic and clinical anatomy as well as Why Diets Make Us Fat: The Unintended Consequences of Our Obsession with Weight Loss download book a fast review source - the perfect supplement to your course's syllabus, lectures, conferences and labs.

Gabriel Tauhou, the leader of the silver dragons, can't take his eyes of May Northcott--not even when May, who has the unique talent of being able to hide in the shadows, has slipped from everyone else's sights. Then May is ordered to steal one of Gabriel's treasures--an immensely important relic of all dragonkin--and he must decide which to protect: his love or his dragons.

Bradford W. Wright: Comic Book Nation: The Transformation of Youth Culture in America

Comic Book Nation: The Transformation of Youth Culture in America

Description

As American as jazz or rock and roll, comic books have been central in the nation's popular culture since Superman's 1938 debut in Action Comics #1. Selling in the millions each year for the past six decades, comic books have figured prominently in the childhoods of most Americans alive today. In Comic Book Nation, Bradford W. Wright offers an engaging, illuminating, and often provocative history of the comic book industry within the context of twentieth-century American society. From Batman's Depression-era battles against corrupt local politicians and Captain America's one-man war against Nazi Germany to Iron Man's Cold War exploits in Vietnam and Spider-Man's confrontations with student protestors and drug use in the early 1970s, comic books have continually reflected the national mood, as Wright's imaginative reading of thousands of titles from the 1930s to the 1980s makes clear. In every genre-superhero, war, romance, crime, and horror comic books-Wright finds that writers and illustrators used the medium to address a variety of serious issues, including racism, economic injustice, fascism, the threat of nuclear war, drug abuse, and teenage alienation. At the same time, xenophobic wartime series proved that comic books could be as reactionary as any medium. Wright's lively study also focuses on the role comic books played in transforming children and adolescents into consumers; the industry's ingenious efforts to market their products to legions of young but savvy fans; the efforts of parents, politicians, religious organizations, civic groups, and child psychologists like Dr. Fredric Wertham (whose 1954 book Seduction of the Innocent, a salacious expose of the medium's violence and sexual content, led to U.S. Senate hearings) to link juvenile delinquency to comic books and impose censorship on the industry; and the changing economics of comic book publishing over the course of the century. For the paperback edition, Wright has written a new postscript that details industry developments in the late 1990s and the response of comic artists to the tragedy of 9/11. Comic Book Nation is at once a serious study of popular culture and an entertaining look at an enduring American art form.

the spirit of kindness how to raise kind, compassionate, and loving children It has been proven that children benefit immensely when parents take an active role in their education. Each of the 12 units in Spell & Write, Grade 1 is introduced by a story that establishes the unit theme and features some of the eight spelling words. Students take a spelling test, edit a sentence, and answer questions about the skills presented in the unit.   One of the world s leading scientists explains why and how the search for intelligent life beyond Earth should be expanded. Fifty years ago, a young astronomer named Frank Drake first pointed a radio telescope at nearby stars in the hope of picking up a signal from an alien civilization. Thus began one of the boldest scientific projects in history, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). After a half-century of scanning the skies, however, astronomers have little to report but an eerie silence eerie because many scientists are convinced that the universe is teeming with life. Physicist and astrobiologist Paul Davies has been closely involved with SETI for three decades and chairs the SETI Post-Detection Taskgroup, charged with deciding what to do if we re suddenly confronted with evidence of alien intelligence. He believes the search so far has fallen into an anthropocentric trap assuming that an alien species will look, think, and behave much like John Surtees: My Incredible Life on Two and Four Wheels download ebook us. In this provocative book Davies refocuses the search, challenging existing ideas of what form an alien intelligence might take, how it might try to communicate with us, and how we should respond if it does."
